Hey, I'm trying to transfer to State (from The Theatre School @ DePaul)at the semester. I've been thinking about majoring in journalism but probably not since my dad teaches @ the J-schooland that would be pretty wierd. I don't really want to be a journalist, I just love to write, I'm prelaw. So I guess my question is how hard is it to get on the State News as a freshman/non-major/after fall semester. Thanks a lot

Heya! I'm at the law school and work in the production department… so I'm proof you don't need to be at the J-school and work here. WRITING here may be a different matter, I don't know how the newsroom goes, but the prod department isn't full of majors.

you don't need to be a jrn major to work at the state news. we have tons of english and/or other majors here. you just have to know how to write and have a passion for journalism.

just apply. i think deadlines for spring interns might be nearing, so make sure you check. possibly by the end of november... (applying for an intern position is really the only way to get on staff as a writer)

I did it. Started in 2000 as a graphic designer, and then transitioned over to tech reporter and north campus reporter and opinion desk afterward. Never once was I in the Jskool or anything like that.
