OK, I've been spent about five years trying to figure out what the hell "CQ" stands for. I've asked every copy chief at all six papers I've worked for, and none of them knew.
I think I've finally found the answer: "The military abbreviation "call to quarters" was adapted by hams in the early days of shortwave radio to announce that they could begin talking to each other. It gravitated to journalism when wire services used the letters to indicate that an unsual spelling of a name was correct.
Now YOU know, and knowing is half the battle.
